How to become a TA
There are many different routes into becoming a teaching assistant outlined below:
- Apprenticeship – GOV Apprenticeships – Search for an apprenticeship – Find an apprenticeship – GOV.UK (findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk) Institute for Apprenticeships – Apprenticeship search / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education.
- Apply – Gaining a TA qualification is not essential; each school is responsible for their recruitment and will have their own ideas about the person they are looking for and what qualifications are needed (if at all). There is no national specified requirement, however, a qualification might strengthen your job application as a school may consider you more desirable with it, particularly if you have experience and the right skill set.
- Volunteer – Volunteering, in whatever capacity, helps to expand knowledge and teaches new skills. For example, you might be considering becoming a TA and want to experience what the role is like. Many schools will gladly accept volunteers to read with children, help with trips or volunteer their time in an afternoon for in class support. This invaluable experience can help prepare you for the role and can even support you in finding your first role as volunteering could lead to permanent employment.
